If water is still coming out
If you can reach the main shutoff without walking through water that may be near outlets or the electrical panel, closing it stops more water from entering. On many houses the main is where the supply comes in, often in a basement, a crawl space, or a utility room. After the main is off, opening a faucet lets pressure out of the lines. Do not use an open flame to thaw a frozen pipe. If you cannot reach the valve safely, stay out of the water and say that in the request.
We do not walk you through a repair, and we do not arrive. The note on a successful send is that a local provider may contact you about your request.
Supply line or drain
A broken supply line is often clean water. A floor drain or toilet that backed up is not. The safety steps, what can be saved, and the price all change with that difference. Say which one you think it is, and say if you are not sure. A provider would rather have an honest uncertainty than a guessed trade term.
If the water is collected downstairs, the flooded basement page covers how clean water, gray water, and sewage are priced differently in national estimates. If the loss has been wet for more than a day or two, also read mold after water damage.
Frozen pipes before they split
An unheated crawl space, a hose bib left charged through a cold snap, and a vacant house with the heat off are common freeze points in this climate. We do not winterize houses. If a pipe is frozen and has not split, say that plainly. If it has already split, say where the water went and what is wet: ceiling, hardwood, carpet, or cabinets.
Insurance is a separate question
A sudden split in a supply line is the kind of loss standard homeowners policies often cover, subject to the deductible and the wording of that policy. A slow leak that has been staining drywall for months is a different story, and water that entered from outside is often a flood exclusion. Details and sources are on the cost and insurance page. We do not file claims and we do not promise that one will be paid.
